About me:
I am a poet and novelist currently living in Seattle. Back when I had more free time, I played jazz and other forms of improvised music as well. Can't wait to get back to it. For now, I'm busy trying to get AmbushArts.com off the ground, waiting tables to pay the bills, and writing whenever I can.

artistic background

Focus:
novel, poetry, and short story
Gigs:
My work has appeared in Center: A Journal of the Literary Arts, Confrontation, Hunger Mountain, Indiana Review, and several other literary journals.
Involvement:
I founded AmbushArts.com after coming to the realization that if I truly wanted to help further the arts in America I would have to devote as much energy to advocacy as I was to creation. Seems like that should have been self-evident all along, but it wasn't. Now, rather than grumble about things like the decline in readership or schools scrapping their art programs, I'd like to see what we can do with AmbushArts.com to help art become essential to more lives. If you'd like to get involved or if you have any thoughts, suggestions, or comments, I'd love to hear from you.

High school:
Roosevelt - Seattle, WA - Class of 1996 College:
University of Washington - Seattle, WA Years attended: 1999 - 2000 Course of study: Jazz Studies Comments: At the time, the UW School of Music was underfunded and most of the budget went to the classical department. Marc Seales, the head of the jazz department, was a huge asset to the program. Larry Coryell was artist in residence while I was there, which was another positive experience. However, there was no permanent jazz guitar instructor. College:
Seattle Central Community College - Seattle, WA Years attended: 1998 - 1999 Course of study: Music Theory and Jazz Studies Comments: Brian Kirk ran a strong and efficient program for entry level to intermediate musicians. The enthusiasm Jim Cauter brought to his Jazz History and World Music survey classes had a huge impact on me. A great place to start taking music seriously. Influences:
Lawrence Durrell, Dean Young, Gary Lutz, and Leonard Cohen.

Did I mention that I love the community news section on the homepage? It's so easy to keep up with new posts, members, etc. This addition truly makes the site feel more like a community. Fantastic! |

Thanks for doing this. I've only just gotten started but the idea is outstanding. I spent 25 years trying to get a career in painting going, working to sustain myself as an artist. I finally came to a similar conclusion - outreach is fundamental. In a world multiplying with artists and yet with increasing limitations on outlets and acceptance for that art, creating anything that promotes the arts in fundamental. You'll hopefully see more of my work and me here. Paul |
